The medication we use most frequently for weight loss is a once per week injectable GLP-1 from one of our compounding pharmacy partners.
Semaglutide acts on multiple body organs: the brain to reduce hunger, cravings and the urge to eat ultimately reducing one’s preoccupation with food; the stomach to slow gastric emptying to feel full sooner and for longer; the pancreas to increase insulin production leading to improved blood sugar control; and the liver to reduce the production of sugar. Together these actions are believed to be responsible for profound weight loss success and the health benefits semaglutide treatment provides.
Tirzepatide is a GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist that has
shown even more effectiveness than semaglutide in some studies
(loss of 20% of body weight compared to 18%).
Patients have reported less GI side effects than semaglutide,
however this medication is slightly more expensive.
Unfortunately, most insurance companies will not cover weight-loss medications, and the retail price for brand name medications are $1000-$1800 a month. Compounded GLP-1s are definitely more affordable, but most other medspas and providers are still charging at least $300 per month for the medication, and a membership fee or subscription on top of that.
Our new patient semaglutide package for someone just starting is an unbelievably low price of $399 for 3 months - making real weight loss affordable for everyone!
The most common side effects are GI related: nausea, diarrhea and/or constipation. Not everyone will experience these effects, but if experienced, they will typically go away as your body adjusts to the medication. Our dosing protocol starts slow to avoid them. If you do experience GI symptoms, we have tips that will help.
GLP-1 medications are not advisable for use in patients who have a history of medullary thyroid cancer, multiple endocrine neoplasm syndrome, or issues with pancreatitis.
